Pompeii was a town in ancient Rome and Vesuvius was an active volcano near the town. Magma had been building up in Vesuvius for over a thousand years and one morning after a loud bang, huge amounts of fire and smoke began to escape from the crater and this was a warning to the people of Pompeii (Cartwright). The bang was caused by a huge cloud of volcanic ash that was shot up into the air over twenty-seven miles into the air resulting in a very large mushroom cloud. After it erupted people began to flee and others just tried to stay above the layers of lava that were beginning to cover the streets of Pompeii. Later in the afternoon it erupted again and this time another huge cloud of volcanic ash was shot thirty-three miles up into the air, this was six miles higher than the original cloud, when it finally collapsed onto what remained of the town at eleven pm that night any survivors were asphyxiated by the ash and their bodies were baked from the tremendous heat of the ash (Cartwright).
The buildings that had not already collapsed from the weight now did with the weight of the fall of the final cloud which contained heavier stones than the original cloud. The once beautiful city of Pompeii, a lovely center for trade was completely wiped off the Earth and removed from the population because it was now buried under several meters of volcanic ash. Pompeii faced this tragic apocalypse on August 24, 79 AD (Cartwright). It was not rediscovered until 1755 when the construction of the Sarno canal began and it was discovered that the local stories about a town being buried until layers of volcanic ash were actually true.
