The Earth’s crust is made up of moving slabs of rock called tectonic plates. These plates are constantly moving bumping into each other, pulling apart and even side-sweeping each other. The place where two plates meet is called a plate boundary and depending on how the plates are meeting and/or moving in relation to each other is going to determine the name of the plate boundary (Earth floor, plate tectonics).
There are three types of boundaries; Convergent, Divergent and, Transform boundaries (American geographical, Volcanoes and earthquakes). A Convergent boundary occurs when plates are bumping into each other. Although the plates move toward each other slowly and colliding can take thousands of years to occur when plates do collide the can cause earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. The second type of boundary that can occur is Divergent boundaries. This is when two tectonic plates pull away from each other and leads to rift valleys such as the one known as the East Africa Rift in Kenya and Ethiopia (American geographical, Volcanoes and earthquakes). The third type of boundary that can occur is a Transform boundary and this is when two tectonic plates are sliding past each other. The San Andreas Fault in California is perhaps the most well-known Transform boundary in the world, and like the other types of boundaries when the plates shift a certain way it can cause earthquakes (American geographical, Volcanoes and earthquakes).
